Damilola Aloba, Partner – Transaction Advisory Services, EY

Damilola is a Partner with EY’s Transaction Advisory Services in Nigeria. He has over 18 years experience in investment banking and corporate finance.

Growing up, I wanted to be a banker but have experience of over 18 years that cuts across investment banking and consulting. I had the opportunity to work in the investment banking industry, particularly in two notable institutions – Leadbank Plc (now Lead Capital) and FCMB Capital Markets. This gave me the opportunity to work on various capital raise and M&A transactions across various sectors. In the consulting industry, I was privileged to work with two of the Big 4 consulting firms and garnered significant exposure and experience (both locally and internationally) to become a seasoned corporate finance professional. I eventually decided to return to the consulting industry and joined EY in 2013 as a Senior Manager. The EY experience has been profound and enriching as it has given me a platform to be connected to my colleagues across the globe and opportunity to advise local and international clients. In my role as a Transaction Adviser, I primarily assist companies actualize their strategic growth (organic/inorganic) plans via structuring transactions for bankability and feasibility, capital raise and advising on mergers and acquisitions. The EY culture of global teaming and focus on building a better working world make EY a great place to build one’s career.

As part of EY’s culture of developing leaders, I was nominated and sponsored by the firm to participate in the LBS Senior Management Programme in 2015. The experience at LBS was remarkable and world class, starting from the faculties, unique and serene learning environment and diversity within the class. In addition, I had the opportunity to network with leaders and executives from different organizations during the programme and even as a member of the very active Alumni community.

At EY, you are groomed to be a leader and given the opportunity to participate in leadership development programmes that equip you as one of the next generation of leaders. I was privileged to be part of the leadership programmes while preparing for my role as a Partner. Some of the specific leadership and strategic skills required include being connected, responsive and insightful to our clients, as a team player, building high performing teams and delivering exceptional client services.

Local organizations can position for global relevance by ensuring that their businesses are institutionalized, their financial statements are prepared according to global standards (IFRS) and should be recognized as a company that “does business the right way” irrespective of the complexities of doing business in Africa.

Businesses looking to scale up or expand beyond Nigeria needs to develop a well-articulated and strong business case. As they prepare for M&As, they need to have the right team, corporate governance, audited financial statements, demonstrate compliance with statutory and regulatory laws and seek the services of credible and experienced advisers to guide them in the process.

I contribute to building high performing teams who deliver exceptional services to our diverse clients. Those high performing teams are built through our shared vision that engages and inspires everyone, developing a diverse mix of talent with the right skills at the right time and setting high standards expected of our profession that enables each individual and team to deliver quality results.
